St Albans Greener Together: A new project coming to St Albans

This blogpost is written by Candice Luper, the Sustainability Projects Officer for St Albans City & District Council.

St Albans Greener Together is a fresh and exciting project which will empower and enable local residents and businesses to come together to create a more environmentally sustainable future: the project is just starting and we’re recruiting a project officer to help us with this exciting project. But even if you’re not in the market for a new job, read on for more details about what’s coming up in the District over the next two years.

A Sustainable District

We are proud that St Albans is a hive of sustainability activity, and many local projects have been started by individuals wanting to do something positive, with the Council supporting their passion. St Albans City & District Council have successfully achieved funding for a project called St Albans Greener Together to capitalise on this activity by inspiring ideas and providing expert advice, support and funding to enable local people to bring forward practical solutions.

Communication and Collaboration

We’re working with experts from the University of Hertfordshire and local stakeholders to develop an innovative climate change communications, education and behaviour change campaign that will capture the attention of everyone in the community. Our aim is to draw attention to the invisible impacts of everyday choices, address the psychological and physical non-technical barriers to action, and demonstrate the combined impact of everyone making small changes. This campaign will incorporate innovative design, imagery and frequently changing messaging to reach previously untapped groups and ensure appeal to people of different ages, backgrounds and interests.

Funding more across the District

A community fund will be established to support local net zero activities. There will be something for everyone to get involved in, whether you want to play a role in accelerating the transition to renewable energy, learn about energy efficiency or greener travel or want to meet more people and join the community. We could have clothes-swaps, a repair café, a men’s shed and working groups – there will be lots of support and activities available and opportunities for people to start their own initiatives. We’re looking forward to seeing what evolves over the next two years.

Join the team

If all of this is sounding right up your alley, and you’d like to play a central role in delivering this exciting project, you could become our Project Officer. Your role would be to co-ordinate and deliver the St Albans Greener Together project across St Albans District. This includes ensuring all requirements of the funder (Innovate UK) are met; that the project achieves its objectives to increase community awareness of climate change; and that community stakeholders are involved and actively participating. You will establish and manage the St Albans Greener Together Community Fund to ensure the funds are used effectively to achieve the project goals. One of these goals is to support the establishment of a community base for sustainability initiatives, called The Green House. In addition to delivering St Albans Greener Together, you will play a crucial role in supporting the delivery of our Sustainability and Climate Crisis Strategy by engaging and advising Council staff and inputting to policy.

You can find out more about the role and how to apply here (tell us if you learned about this role from this blog!), and make sure you keep an eye out for more information in the coming months as the Greener Together project rolls out across the District.
