Sustainability Festival 2024

SustSchools week, a SustFest Expo and SustFest24 events in the community all a success.

A big Thank you to all groups that have taken part in various aspects of SustFest24. So many different events were taking place this year that we probably won’t be able to mention them all but here is a taster.

Schools across the district took part starting with the Alban City School Choir and orchestra’s fantastic performance at the EXPO on Sunday 7th June, they drew a big crowd outside the arena as they performed on the balcony as part of the Green Arts programme.

In the week following, three schools visited The Green House; others invited Sustainable Schools Champ, Virginia Cinquemani, or Wilder Schools Champs to their assemblies, and held sustainability-themed lessons, and activities chosen by their Eco-groups. They investigated ponds and pollinators and built habitats in the school grounds; along with reducing waste, swapping and recycling.

The Sustainable Schools group held their termly Networking Zoom on Greening your School’s Buildings and Grounds, with a Climate Action Advisor describing Lets Go Zero’s new initiative to provide free independent advice to schools on decarbonisation. For more information on the sustainable school group activities visit the website here:

The first ever SustFest Expo was also a great success with over 1500 visitors at the Alban arena and included 36 separate events and a full foyer and arena floor of stalls and exhibits.

There were useful Q and A sessions, community groups displays, networking groups and workshops as well as key speaker presentations.

Visitors were surveyed on the way out of the arena and a whopping 77% were new to SustFest, which is great news for spreading the word!

There were over 30 SustFest24 events in the communities across the district, These including walks, talks, music festivals, craft, litter picking, plant swaps and gardening all proving hugely popular.

As always this festival of ‘focus on sustainability’ depends on our collaborators, sponsors and visitors to be a success and this year more than any we have appreciated you all. So thank you for your support.

Remember to look out for next year’s SustFest dates as it will be our tenth festival!
