We’ve been catching up with key people who have helped build the Sustainability Festival over the last decade into what it has become today. Today we’re speaking to trustee Jill Watson about what makes #SustFest so special, the impact on the local community and how it can help future generations.
Reflecting on Impact
What sustainability achievement are you most proud of during your time with the group?
The fact that 10 years on we are still getting such great collaboration from our community. Each year the focus goes in a slightly different direction but that is lead by what events people want to organise. It makes this festival continue to be very relevant.
What project or initiative had the most lasting impact, in your view?
Sustfest events helping to get the council to declare a climate emergency (2019). It raised awareness across the district and it was all of the eco groups working together to push for this acknowledgement.
Celebrating Collaboration
What did you enjoy most about working with other members?
Everyone is working towards the same goal, and has the same aims. You don’t have to explain the seriousness of the situation or why its important to you.
Were there any unexpected partnerships or collaborations that turned out to be especially fruitful?
All partnerships and groups that have contributed by organising an event have been essential to the success of the festival. And that’s important to remember if it’s a group of 3 people or 30. But the more personal events, case studies and real life stories really have the best engagement.
Learning and Growth
What’s one thing you learned from being part of the group that you still carry with you?
There are other people around us that also share the same values.
Did your involvement change how you think about sustainability or community action?
It made me realise how powerful community action is and how it can be used to drive changes in authorities and businesses.
Looking Forward
What opportunities do you see for future sustainability efforts in our community?
Infinite opportunity if people work together, Sustainable St Albans members and engagement is growing but many individuals think they cant make a difference so are reluctant to try.
What message would you give to the future generations, like those at Oaklands about the sustainability challenges ahead?
I think the future generations are already streets ahead of us in their understanding and ability to impact. I would tell them to keep looking forward and concentrate on finding solutions, keep up the good work! Don’t be tempted to look back and start blaming which is what the older generations tend to do, that just delays any progress.
Moments of Joy
What was the most fun or memorable event you participated in?
The markets and market takeovers, just the hustle and bustle and meeting new people.
What made being part of the group meaningful or enjoyable for you
The feeling that I am doing something positive and that I might be able to encourage someone else to get involved too.
