Meet the stallholders – kid’s organic clothes without the beige, with AOK London

AOK London at Harpenden Sustainability Market

Based in North-West London, AOK London is a playful, unisex clothing brand which specialises in organic cotton tees and sweatshirts. Featuring slogans inspired by founder Karen’s son, who’s now five, these gorgeous garments are perfect for kids and adults alike. AOK London is a new addition to the Harpenden Sustainability Market, and joined us for the first time in September. They’ll be back at the next market on Sunday the 15th of November.

‘Organic. Without the beige’

AOK London was founded just last year by Karen Baskaran, a designer with 20 years experience in childrenswear. Working in this industry exposed her to the realities of fast fashion and overproduction, pushing Karen to build something different.

Karen explained that, ‘I always like to take part in events like this that put sustainability first, because that’s why I started the brand in the first place’.

Every piece is thoughtfully designed by Karen. Expect soft fabrics, bold colours, and fun graphics which reflect your child’s colourful personality. As Karen explained: ‘kids should be able to wear whatever they like’. Unlike high street shops which categorise clothing into girls’ and boys’ sections, AOK London offers comfortable unisex clothing for every child.

Sustainability stand outs

1: Made to Last

AOK London prioritises sustainable practices. Firstly, unlike fast-fashion brands, this clothing is designed to last. Each piece is made from heavier-weight cotton than high street or supermarket clothes, so it will last more than one season and can be handed down.

2: Printed on Demand

Their clever production practices also aim to minimise waste. The clothing is printed on demand in the Isle of Wight, so there is no waste from overproduction.

3: Recyclable

The recyclability of a garment cannot be taken for granted. Clothing is often made from blended fabrics, for example 20% polyester and 80% cotton. Recycling such blends is virtually impossible, as there is currently no economically viable way to separate the different fibre types. This results in huge volumes of textiles waste ending up in landfills.

This is where AOK London is different. Every piece is made from 100% organic cotton, and features a QR code which allows you to return it to the UK manufacturer. Here, it will be given a new life as another item of clothing.

4: Organic and Plastic-Free

AOK London only uses certified organic cotton. This means every garment is free from plastic-based synthetics like polyester and nylon, which can’t biodegrade.  Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals or pesticides, making it better for the planet and perfect for sensitive skin.

What’s more, AOK London only uses OEKO-TEX certified dyes. This improves the environmental impact of the dying process, and ensures that the clothing is free from harmful substances.

And Karen’s sustainability tips?

‘Check labels, support smaller local businesses, and hand things down.’
